On the Night You Were Born was written and illustrated by Nancy Tillman and published by Feiwel and Friends (boardbook edition, 2010). This board book has a soothing lullaby style that fits perfectly with its title.

Each page introduces a new animal such as a frog or duck or polar bear or dolphin who tell you how wonderful and marvelous you are. Even the moon smiled, the stars peeked to see and the wind and rain sang your name on the night you were born.

The author draws the listeners into this night time story by asking them to join in and say their marvelous name or wiggle their toes on the count of three.
The colorful illustrations of the smiling face of the moon and dancing musical notes continue the night time theme and add to the excitement and flow of the story.

I give this book lots of smiles for its high comfort level and the opportunity to share about when you were born. Each child needs to know they are special and that heaven played every horn to trumpet their arrival.

The richness of the text is more for five and six year-olds, but younger children will enjoy the many animals that turn up page after page. On the Night You Were Born would make a great birthday gift for anyone, even those from eight to eighty.
