Dear Book Lovers,

At a children’s writing conference a couple years ago a bookseller announced that the target audience for YA fiction was 12- to 25-year-olds.

Did your jaw just drop? Mine did when I first heard it. Aren’t twelve-year-olds needs and knowledge and experience way different from twenty-five-year olds? (I’m talking on the whole. I know a twelve-year-old can have moments of insight and a twenty-five-year-old can have moments of immaturity.) Shouldn’t our culture respect those differences?

There is good news–maybe. The industry looks as if they may be creating a fiction genre targeted for twentysomethings.
