Dear Book Lovers,

I think it is especially important to consider the moral character of the protagonist if the child is reading a series. The child will be spending a lot of time with that main character. How that character sees the world will influence how the child reader sees the world. Children may even try mimicking the behavior of the protagonist.

The daughter of a friend of mine was devouring a very popular series that had an I’m-going-to-say-whatever-I-want and do-whatever-occurs-to-me kind of main character. Many book reviewers loved this brash character and found her funny. Kids laughed when they read her antics. However, my friend and her daughter didn’t laugh when the daughter tried behaving in the same manner.
